Guinza

Picture of Guinza

Sadly, our lovely Guinza passed away on Saturday 11th May, aged 5.

She died as a result of complications, following major abdominal surgery. Incredibly, thanks to the skill of our vet and to Guinza's determination, she survived the operation and for a few days looked to be doing well. Sadly, it proved too much even for Guinza and we lost her a week later. One fact that comforted us was that she died by her food bowl, doing one of the things she loved most: eating.

Guinza was a tortoiseshell and white, short haired female, born in May 1997. She was a young Mum as (unknown to us), she was pregnant when we got her aged 9 weeks. On 23rd September 1997, Guinza gave birth to two adorable babies: a black short-haired male called Splotch and a agouti/brown female called Hobnob.

Guinza started out as the largest of the girls, earning her the nickname of "sumo"! However, following various health problems she gradually lost weight and ended up being known as our little "skinny". She always had a gentle emperament but despite this was the most dominant of the 3 girls.

Guinza was always amenable to being stroked and picked up, despite the fact that for her last few months she was having to be given medicine by syringe quite frequently.

She had a lot of sweet ways and we miss her terribly. One thing she will be particularly remembered for was the way she leapt up my arm when she was ready to be put back in the cage. Also, her attempts at wheeking: lots of effort but not much noise, always sounding as though she was losing her voice! Some of the other things we loved about her were:

  • Her complete enjoyment at having her chin tickled
  • The way she liked having her head stroked
  • The way she always snuggled down with the other two piggies, making a happy purring noise
  • Her excitement at getting a new handful of hay and burrowing straight in.
  • Her contented "chuckling" sounds at having her back stroked
  • The way she never minded being picked up, weighed or given medicine
  • Her bravery and strength, despite appearing so tiny and frail at the end

Guinza was such a brave little piggie, with a lovely character and we have spent a lot of time looking after her health over the last two years. We will never forget her.
